Columbus Day Weekend – 2011

We’ve all seen tons of video from this impromptu and powerful Grassroots protest movement.

I am attempting in my photographs to give you time to linger, to read the signs, look into the faces – and perhaps see yourself there too.

For those of you (us) over a certain age what you see here will undoubtedly conjure up memories of the youth protest movement in the ’60′s. As in that time, this current movement caught everyone by surprise. Who knows how long Mayor Bloomberg will allow the protesters to remain?

For now the sounds of drums and protest shouts drown out the city’s noise – giving us all pause to reflect how the financial collapse in 2007 has brought us to this moment.

With only one week’s notice, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles was asked to perform at the President’s fundraising swing through the Los Angeles area on September 26, 2011. 60 members of the chorus performed two numbers to a crowd of over 1,000 who had each paid a minimum of $250 to hear President Obama. Jesse Tyler Ferguson was the Emcee for the evening, with additional entertainment provided by Rapper B.o.B.

The President spoke passionately about the need to pass his Jobs Bill – and cautioned the audience that the election in 2012 would require a different energy than 2008′s campaign.

It was a real honor to be the official photographer for GMCLA for this event, and I found myself amongst the White House Press Pool!

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received about being a Photographer is that fully 50% of a great shot is simply being in the right place at the right time, with the right equipment. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed fantastic photo opportunities because I either didn’t have my camera with me, or didn’t have the right camera with me! So my first piece of advice is simply to Show Up and be present – great photos will follow!
